Item — Box: CFC Records Box 1
Identifier: CFC2024.0025.1

Though the fables are read in French, the extensive commentary on the jacket's back is in English. The French and English face each other in the accompanying large translation booklet.

Fables de La Fontaine: Memory, 2022

Item — Box: CFC Games Box 1
Identifier: CFC2022.0079.1
Abstract

Each of 16 fables has a brown-backed and a green-backed paper disc. In each case, half of a moral is on one and the other half on the other. The Hellé illustrations are such wonderful old friends! One starts by laying out all the cards face down. Then you start making matches as in any memory game. However it happens, this is fun!

"Fables de La Fontaine" plate, 1980

 Item
Identifier: CFC2020.0053.1
Abstract This encounter at the St. Ouen flea market was unusual. I asked about fable books and cards. As they presented me with a simple book, which I bought, they also alerted each other, reached in the back and, as I recall, cleaned up a plate that they had: this plate! I can find no other identifying marks. The most popular characters from La Fontaine are here: fox, crow, cicada, tortoise, town and country mice, hare, bear, frog, and heron. The interplay of the three colors in the bodies and...

Faboland Bonjour Maitre de La Fontaine Set of 10 Fèves, 2012

Item — Box: CFC Artifact Box 11
Identifier: CFC2021.0595.1.1-10
Abstract

2012? Complete Series of 10 Faboland Fable Fèves. "Bonjour Maitre de La Fontaine."

This is another successful set of fable fèves. Spatial proportions are sometimes compromised here, e.g. in OF, but overall the series is quite successful. Among the best pieces, I believe, are "The Wolf Turned Shepherd"; MSA; and GGE.

FC Cheese Fair La Capelle, 1973

Item — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0077.1
Abstract

This card is an official souvenir of the festival. The cancellation design is the same as the three-color design on the recto of the card: fox and crow appear to be contending over a round of cheese. Fables show up in many places! I checked the fair out on the web. It looks like just the sort of thing we Wisconsinites would love!

FC Ten Cards by OEP, 1904

Item — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0027.1-10
Abstract This is a curious set, first of all for its size: most sets of photographic fable postcards include six members, while this set has ten. It is curious next for using a single child to play both parts in this visualization of the fable. Fable depends so much on interaction of two parties; it is a surprise to see each card in this whole series picture just one character. Finally, it is curious for an inversion in Verse 10: Card 5 has "Le Corbeau à ces mots ne se sent plus de joie" whereas...

Femina FG, 1904

File — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0031.1-5
Abstract Do I read this series wrong by understanding it to portray a romantic relationship that does not turn out as the initiator desires – and so he rejects it? Notice that the sender dates his five cards in April on the 5th, 16th (twice), and 25th (twice). Was he trying to suggest something to Mademoiselle M.L. Pouchan in Pau? Did she come down from her ladder? "Femina" has a distinctive cursive signature, clear on each of these cards, for its publications in the early 20th century,...

Femina Fox and Bust, 1903

File — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0121.1-7
Abstract The human representation of this fable shows a fascinating way of taking the story. As I walk through these photographic human representations of animal stories, I have the sense that the "director" and the audience both know their animal fables so well that the director is at pains to find something new and creative in the human representation. La Fontaine tells us that most people in high places are no more than theater masks that impress asses. The fox by contrast examines them slowly and...

FG Plate, 1910

Item — Box: CFC Tableware Box 2
Identifier: CFC2019.0031.1
Abstract The seller tells me that the trademark "Marque blazon couronné KG" was used between 1880 and 1922. Each plate shows a pleasing interaction between a central photograph-like image in black and the green leaf-pattern around the outside, with a strong, dark green rim beyond that. The fable title is given at the top of the image, and key lines are at the bottom. In the extra plate, there is a set of repaired cracks from 8 to 10 o'clock. After having just one plate for twenty years, I feel...

Flan Imperial, Set of 53, 1930

File — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0114.1-53
Abstract "Cards" is an overstatement for these 2½" x 3½" slips of paper. On one side is a colored illustration, title, and number. On the verso is the text of the fable and, after #96, an indication that there are two albums to be filled out, Album No. 1 for Fables #1-#96 and Album No. 2 for Fables #97-#192. Of course, the collector in me is already wondering where I can find the two complete albums. The color work is sometimes better than one would expect for a simple effort like these...

Flan Imperial Trade Cards, Album, 1930

 Item
Identifier: CFC2022.0013
Abstract A second album including 14 cards. The second album fills in several of the cards missing among the individual cards. I recommend keeping it with the cards. "Cards" is an overstatement for these 2½" x 3½" slips of paper. On one side is a colored illustration, title, and number. On the verso is the text of the fable and, after #96, an indication that there are two albums to be filled out, Album No. 1 for Fables #1-#96 and Album No. 2 for Fables #97-#192. Of course, the...

Fox and Crow Cookie Tub, 1980

Item — Box: CFC Cans and Tins Box 4
Identifier: CFC2018.0131.1
Abstract

Here again is The Fox and the Crow , dramatically presented in five cartoon panels around this oval tin. The title of this fable stands over the first two panels. Each panel is accompanied by two to five lines of La Fontaine's text. The crow is dressed in tuxedo and high silk hat and carries a cane. The fox is in a jaunty country outfit with a large feather--and two ear-holes--in his cap.

Fox and Crow Paper Bookmark Puzzle, 2006

 Item
Identifier: CFC2022.0014.1
Abstract

A set of three bookmark puzzles. Each set is by a different artist. This genre is new to me. Five individual bookmarks line up together to make a larger scene from La Fontaine's fables. Who would have thought?! Collecting fables is giving me an education!

This set is for the fable of the Fox and the Crow done by the artist Chantal Leclerc.

Fox and Goat decorative plate, 1990

Item — Box: CFC Tableware Box 9
Identifier: CFC2019.0040.2.5
Abstract

This lovely set combines busy central images with a uniform "leaf, grape, and vine" decoration around each plate's border. They choose well when they put FC on the cover of the box. My second prize goes to "The Crow Trying to Imitate an Eagle." In both of these, the open spaces make reading the plate's central image easier and more enjoyable.

Dates: 1990

Fox and Grapes Card, 1896

Item — Box: CFC Chocolate and Chicoree Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2018.0270.2
Abstract

The scene of disdain at the Joaillerie is delightful, as this plaid-jacketed and bearded man puts down what he cannot have. The back is full of information, including the fact that Le Royal Chocolat won the grand price at the Bordeaux International Exposition in 1896. Royal Chocolat has created a truly hygienic chocolate! There is also a price-list, for those who want to know how little a good candy bar cost in the 1890's.

Dates: 1896

French Gold, Set of 10, 1880

File — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0001.1-10
Abstract

Several years ago I found a full set of Wemple/Kronheim cards with green backgrounds after struggling to find eight individual cards. They bear no markings besides the fable's name in French. The card lacking from the second set is FM. The gold background invites scratches. Some of the printing here is not exact. The versos are all blank.
